AI Intrusion Polluting "Radiant Black Urban Hubs", According to SZA
In the heart of Memphis, Tennessee, concerns about environmental justice have arisen surrounding Elon Musk's xAI facility. The facility, which operates methane gas turbines, has been accused of polluting predominantly Black neighborhoods in South Memphis, exacerbating existing health disparities such as high cancer rates and asthma.
Residents and activists claim that the xAI data center emits hazardous chemicals, including formaldehyde, contributing to poor air quality. A key point of contention is that the facility reportedly installed 35 gas turbines without required environmental permits or impact assessments, with the company stating that emissions controls were pending but not yet installed.
The air pollution from the facility is described as a daily health threat by community members, who point out that South Memphis already suffers from environmental injustice and disproportionately high respiratory and cancer risks. Activists and advocates label these practices as environmental racism, emphasising the pattern of hazardous industrial sites being sited in Black and low-income neighbourhoods.
There are also concerns about local officials possibly signing non-disclosure agreements limiting public input and transparency. The broader context shows that AI data centers nationwide often escape rigorous environmental review, exacerbating pollution and health risks, especially in marginalised communities.
Recently, R&B singer SZA raised concerns about the environmental impact of AI on July 16, stating that AI is causing harm and pollution in Black and brown cities, with specific examples including Memphis. The NAACP has accused xAI of exposing majority-Black neighbourhoods to hazardous emissions and demanded an immediate shutdown of the Colossus data center.
The Shelby County Health Department issued a permit for xAI to operate up to 15 turbines, despite concerns. SZA expressed her frustration that her warnings are not being heard, and civil rights advocates in Memphis echo her concerns about AI's environmental impact. SZA, who is only interested in using "actual imagination" instead of AI, warned about the consequences of convenience, stating that Black and brown communities will pay the brunt of the price.
The NAACP's formal complaint to the Shelby County Health Department pointed to the use of multiple gas turbines by xAI. The turbines used by xAI allegedly release hazardous air pollutants, such as formaldehyde, at levels exceeding EPA limits.
