Cerence Introduces Revolutionary In-Car Voice Assistant Platform

Cerence Inc., a leading provider of voice-enabled technology for the automotive industry, has unveiled Cerence xUI - a cutting-edge, hybrid AI platform designed specifically for in-car voice assistants. This innovative technology offers advanced multimodal and context-aware capabilities, enhancing the driving and passenger experience.

One of the key features of Cerence xUI is its multimodal interaction. By integrating inputs from voice, car sensors, and camera-based video streams, the platform creates rich, context-aware responses both inside and outside the vehicle. This allows for a more immersive and intuitive user experience.

Another significant aspect of Cerence xUI is its Small Language Model (SLM) called CalmEdge, developed in partnership with NVIDIA and MediaTek. CalmEdge enables onboard AI processing with low latency and privacy by operating at the edge. This means that AI-powered features can be accessible without an internet connection, providing seamless, responsive interaction even in environments with limited connectivity.

Cerence xUI also offers novel informational services. For instance, it can explain or translate road signs, identify roadside buildings, and provide details about points of interest like billboards. These features not only improve safety but also offer new revenue streams for automakers.

The platform supports multiple languages, with demonstrated capabilities in English and Mandarin, and plans to expand language availability globally. Cerence xUI has already been launched and demonstrated in collaboration with major automotive customers such as Jaguar Land Rover and Renault, showcasing its real-world applicability.

Cerence xUI marks a significant step toward embedding sophisticated AI directly into vehicles. The platform incorporates Cerence's proprietary CaLLM family of models, fine-tuned for the automotive environment. It can be deployed on embedded hardware, such as NVIDIA's DRIVE AGX Orin, and in the cloud. The platform was built in collaboration with NVIDIA and Microsoft.

In summary, Cerence xUI combines cutting-edge AI, embedded multimodal sensor fusion, and edge computing to create a fully agentic, smart in-car assistant platform. This technology enhances situational awareness, user engagement, and branding for automakers, signalling strong industry interest in next-generation voice assistants, as evidenced by Cerence's strategic partnerships with global automakers.
