Air India Flight 171 Crash: Fuel Switches Off, 167 Dead

Air India Flight 171 crashed shortly after takeoff, killing all 158 passengers and 9 crew members. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, with aviation experts and psychologists involved. A key focus is whether the fuel supply switches were turned off deliberately, inadvertently, or due to a system failure.

The preliminary report revealed that the fuel-control switches were deactivated immediately after the plane departed from Delhi. This action, occurring just 32 seconds into the flight, resulted in the crash. The cockpit voice recording captured a conversation where the younger co-pilot asked his colleague why the fuel switches were turned off. The identity of the person who deactivated the switches and from which seat it was done remains under investigation.

The captain and first officer responded differently to the situation. The first officer expressed surprise and panic, while the captain remained calm. The Airline Pilots' Association of India has since pushed back on human action as the cause of the crash. India's civil aviation authority has ordered an inspection of cockpit fuel switches on Boeing 737 and 787 aircraft in the country as a precautionary measure.

The investigation into the Air India Flight 171 crash continues, with no definitive conclusions drawn yet. The role of the pilots and the cause of the fuel switch-off remain under scrutiny. The outcome of the investigation will likely impact aviation safety procedures and regulations.
