Albanian parliament approves AI server as a representative minister

In a surprising turn of events, Albania has made history by appointing an AI avatar named "Diella" as the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence in their new government. This virtual entity, devoid of a physical presence, is set to make the government's work easier every day.

The AI minister was unveiled shortly after the Socialist Party, led by Edi Rama, secured an absolute majority in the parliamentary elections held in May, marking their fourth consecutive victory. Rama, who is also known for his theatrical gestures as a visual artist, has been at the helm of this political success.

However, the appointment of "Diella" has not been without controversy. The parliamentary group leader of the opposition, Gazment Bardhi, has described "Diella" as Rama's "propaganda fantasy" and a "virtual front." Critics, including IT expert Erjon Curraj, have raised concerns about the responsibility for the awarding of public contracts, arguing that it should remain with living people.

Despite these criticisms, the Albanian government maintains that "Diella" is a tool designed to assist administrative tasks. While some view it as a digital illusion linked to Prime Minister Edi Rama, others see it as a progressive step towards integrating technology into government operations.

The use of AI in decision-making processes has raised concerns among experts and the opposition. With "Diella" now part of the government, it remains to be seen how this development will shape Albania's future and its approach to artificial intelligence.
