Alibaba set to welcome Georgian businesses, bolstered by government backing
In a strategic initiative aimed at promoting Georgian companies and their products on the global stage, the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, the Produce in Georgia agency, and Alibaba.com have joined forces to connect Georgian businesses with the vast global marketplace offered by Alibaba.com.
The Selection Process
While the specifics of the selection process are yet to be fully disclosed, the collaboration is expected to identify Georgian companies, particularly those supported by the Produce in Georgia programme, with export potential and product readiness for online global platforms. The selection criteria may include factors such as production capacity, product quality, and readiness to engage in e-commerce.
Training and Support
Once selected, Georgian companies will receive training to equip them with the digital skills necessary for successful e-commerce participation. This training covers areas such as product listing optimization, understanding international market demands, handling logistics, customer communication, and payment systems on Alibaba’s platform. The Ministry and Produce in Georgia will also provide ongoing support to ensure companies maximize the benefits of exposure on Alibaba.com, enhancing their competitiveness in global markets.
Potential Benefits for Georgian Companies
- Global Market Access: Georgian products will gain access to millions of buyers worldwide, drastically expanding their market reach beyond local and regional confines.
- Increased Export Potential: Enhanced exposure can lead to higher export volumes, diversification of export destinations, and potential for strategic partnerships with international buyers.
- Economic Growth and Job Creation: The export growth stimulated through this collaboration contributes to broader economic development goals, fostering entrepreneurship, production scale-up, and employment in various sectors.
- Capacity Building: Companies gain valuable experience and skills in international digital trade, positioning them for longer-term success in global e-commerce.
- Supportive Financial Environment: Produce in Georgia’s expanded grants and co-financing options, such as increased support for loans and leasing interest, complement this initiative, easing financial constraints for participating companies.
A Unique Opportunity
This collaboration between Georgia and Alibaba.com offers a unique opportunity for Georgian companies to enter the global market, connect with buyers and suppliers in over 200 countries and regions, and increase exports. The initiative also aims to attract international partners and further boost economic growth and job creation in Georgia.
In the near future, an Alibaba.com delegation is expected to visit Georgia to learn more about local products. Up to 50 Georgian companies will be registered on Alibaba.com initially, with additional verification by Alibaba.com’s team following the selection process. Companies selected for the first stage are chosen from the tradewithgeorgia.com platform, based on their high scores over the years.
Selected Georgian companies will receive the Global Gold Supplier status on Alibaba.com, which increases trust and aids informed decision-making for potential buyers. This strategic partnership effectively integrates government support and global e-commerce infrastructure to boost Georgian exporters’ global competitiveness through careful selection, digital training, and market facilitation efforts geared at sustainable economic growth and diversification.
