Amazon Halts Drone Deliveries in Phoenix After Crane Collision
Amazon has temporarily halted drone deliveries in the Phoenix area following a collision incident involving two of its Prime Air drones. The incident, which occurred near an Amazon logistics center, resulted in no injuries but has raised concerns about safety and led to the suspension of services.
This is the second time Amazon has suspended drone deliveries in Arizona after similar incidents. In September 2024, a previous collision involving Amazon's delivery drones made headlines. Despite these setbacks, Amazon received FAA approval in May 2025 to deliver smartphones and other battery-operated devices using its drones, indicating a vote of confidence in the technology's potential.
The latest incident saw two Amazon Prime Air drones collide with a construction crane and crash in Tolleson, Arizona. The investigation into the cause of the collision has been handed over to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Amazon has implemented a structured emergency landing procedure called Safe Contingent Landing (SCL) for critical situations like this, but it remains unclear why the drones did not activate this safety measure. The drones landed on different parking lots near the Amazon logistics center.
Amazon has suspended drone deliveries in the Phoenix region while the investigation into the collision is ongoing. This incident underscores the challenges faced by companies operating delivery drones, particularly in urban areas with potential hazards like construction cranes. As Amazon continues to develop and refine its drone delivery technology, safety remains a top priority.
