In the year 2024, often referred to as the "year of the deepfake," the news cycle has been swamped with frauds involving artificial intelligence-altered videos, audio, and images. From the surge of fabricated celebrity endorsements to the distribution of false information, what was initially a niche novelty has expanded into a widespread and worrying issue.

As AI technology continues to evolve at an accelerated pace, distinguishing between genuine and fake content online is becoming increasingly challenging. As these technologies improve, identifying deception becomes even trickier, posing serious risks for individuals, businesses, and societies.

To handle these escalating risks and maintain public trust, we urgently require solutions to shield authentic internet users and companies, minimize fraud, and halt the dissemination of misinformation.

An Escalating Menace to Online Trustworthiness

The FBI reported that in 2023, about 38% of online scam victims were targeted with deepfake content. A 2024 Medius research revealed that more than half of finance experts in the U.S. and U.K. have been targeted by deepfake-led financial scams, with 43% falling prey to such attacks. The cryptocurrency sector has been particularly affected, with deepfake-related occurrences increasing by an astounding 654% from 2023 to 2024.

Conventional finance is not immune either. The summer of 2024 saw New York Attorney General Letitia James raise the alarm regarding investment scams using deepfake videos of celebrities like Warren Buffett and Elon Musk to attract investors. A Hong Kong finance worker was swindled out of an astounding $25 million, all thanks to deepfakes of a "chief financial officer" and other employees convincing him to transfer funds.

In a world where more of our daily activities are migrating online—ranging from work meetings to telehealth appointments to banking and financial planning—the ability to trust that the individuals we interact with are genuine has never been more essential. The stakes could not be higher.

Current Approaches to Resolving the Deepfake Crisis

At the moment, the regulatory landscape regarding deepfakes is fragmented at best. In the U.S., there is no all-encompassing federal law addressing the creation, dissemination, and usage of deepfakes. While some states like Florida, Texas, and Washington have passed their own legislation, and Congress is now considering regulations, these measures are still in their infancy.

Beyond regulations, a growing number of technological defenses are entering the market to tackle this issue. Google DeepMind recently made its AI text watermark tool open source, enabling anyone to use it. However, it is not foolproof; it primarily identifies AI-generated text but does not yet extend to audio or video manipulations.

Facebook and Instagram are testing new facial recognition tools to quickly restore compromised accounts and identify fake celebrity endorsements. While promising, these initiatives are still in the trial phase and have limited scope. They can assist in detecting deepfakes in specific scenarios—including synthetic media involving user-generated content, videos, livestreams, and cross-platform sharing—but do not offer a comprehensive solution.

McAfee has also launched a tool that helps users distinguish between real and fake audio in videos on platforms like YouTube or X (formerly Twitter). Similarly, a Google Chrome extension from Hiya utilizes AI to determine if the voice in on-screen video or audio is genuine or fake. While these tools can be useful for detecting certain audio-based deepfakes, they only address a limited aspect of the problem. AI-manipulated videos and images, which make up a substantial part of deepfakes, can still slip through unnoticed.

Bridging the Gap in Deepfake Detection Tools

We need advanced solutions capable of swiftly and accurately identifying deepfakes, especially as they become increasingly sophisticated. These tools must be integrated into social media platforms, video hosting sites, and financial systems to protect both consumers and businesses.

Governments, tech companies, financial institutions, and law enforcement must collaborate more closely to combat deepfake fraud. This means developing standardized strategies and protocols for deepfake detection, sharing best practices, and fostering stronger partnerships to mitigate the risks associated with this technology.

The Future Path

Deepfakes pose one of the most significant threats to digital security and public trust today. However, no single industry can resolve this challenge alone. With the increasing complexity and reach of these technologies, urgent action and investment are needed from both the private and public sectors—including governments, tech companies, and consumers.

One thing is clear: Establishing the authenticity of individuals online in a way that respects privacy and is user-friendly will be essential for safeguarding all internet users. Without this ability, the digital landscape will remain increasingly vulnerable to manipulation and deceit.
