Artificial intelligence-composed track by AKB48, the Japanese girl band, gets the nod over a human-written one, as fans show preference for the AI-generated single.
In an unexpected turn of events, the world's largest pop group, AKB48, has released a single titled "Omoide Scroll / Memory Scroll" that was created using artificial intelligence (AI). This AI-generated song unexpectedly won a song showdown on Nippon TV, beating a rival song written by J-pop producer Yasushi Akimoto.
The AI-created song, named after Akimoto himself, received 14,225 votes out of a total 24,760, making it the clear favourite among fans. The techno-pop track, which explores heartbreak in the smartphone era, was powered by Google's Gemini, trained on Akimoto's library of lyrics and public statements.
AKB48's official X account thanked viewers for watching the Nippon TV special program, but remained neutral in the clash of the Akimotos. However, the human Akimoto, initially found the AI's victory disappointing, had previously shown openness to being inspired by the AI. In a light-hearted response, he jokingly said, "Oh, be quiet."
Shinji Ishimaru, leader of The Path to Rebirth political party, expressed interest in AI-created music for AKB48, adding another layer of intrigue to this unique musical collaboration. The fringe party, known for its unconventional ideas, has also expressed interest in having a chatbot penguin as its leader.
AKB48 members, who are split into teams for rotating performances and are replaced when they "graduate," have been commercial darlings, selling various products and appearing in advertisements. The popularity of the AI-generated song among fans suggests that this could be a new trend in the music industry.
The AI "Akimoto" expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate and suggested that its loss might have been intentional to show something new. One social media comment even suggested that the AI-generated song might sell better than recent Akimoto songs. Many social media comments expressed excitement about the release of the AI-created song.
AKB48, with over 120 members, has spawned several sister groups, including SNH48, JKT48, and MNL48. The release of the AI-generated single marks a significant step forward in the integration of AI in the music industry and the future of pop music.
