Asus ROG (Republic of Gamers) gaming laptops, including popular models such as the Zephyrus M16, Strix, and Scar, have been facing a series of issues since August 2021, according to research by Mohamed "Zephkek" Maatallah. The problems include stuttering while watching YouTube videos, audio crackling and pops on Discord, random mouse cursor freezes, and more.

The root cause of these issues appears to be an ACPI firmware bug, which introduces unnecessary delays and affects the handling of interrupt requests, as well as the power cycling of dedicated GPUs. Zephkek, a GitHub user, was the first to report these problems, with the first public report made for a G15 Advantage Edition Asus laptop in August 2021.

Zephkek's research also revealed that a single CPU core is being bottlenecked by interrupt requests for as long as 90 seconds in some cases. Additionally, he discovered strange power cycling of the dedicated GPU, turning it off and on again every 15-30 seconds.

Asus has acknowledged the issues and expressed gratitude to users for their patience. In a statement, the company confirmed that they are actively investigating these cases and are dedicated to delivering smooth and reliable performance. They are expected to release a firmware patch to fix the problems for the majority of users.

Tom's Hardware, a reputable source for news, analysis, and reviews in the tech industry, suggests following them on Google News or adding them as a preferred source to stay updated on the latest developments regarding this issue and other tech-related news.

The problems affecting ROG laptops persist through 2021 and into 2024, suggesting they affect multiple generations of Asus gaming laptops. Users across various ROG lines have reported experiencing these issues, indicating a widespread problem.

Asus' team is working diligently to address these concerns and provide a solution for affected users. Until then, users are advised to monitor updates from Asus and trusted tech sources for the latest information.
