Aviation giant GE Aerospace to fuel Silk Way West's upgraded wide-body freighter airline fleet
In a strategic move to modernise its fleet, Silk Way West Airlines announced plans to invest in Boeing 777-8 Freighters and 777 Freighters, all equipped with the world's most powerful commercial aircraft engine, the GE9X, exclusive to the Boeing 777X family.
This decision marks an extended partnership between Silk Way West Airlines and GE Aerospace, a leading provider in the aviation industry. Russell Stokes, president and chief executive of GE Aerospace's commercial engines and services, expressed pride in continuing this relationship as Silk Way West Airlines embarks on its fleet modernisation journey.
The GE9X engine, in service since 2011, is a testament to GE Aerospace's commitment to innovation. It was the first commercial engine in the 100,000-pound thrust class, pioneering composite fan blades and additive manufacturing. The GEnx engine, GE's fastest-selling high-thrust engine, delivers 10% better specific fuel consumption than its predecessor.
Onno Pietersma, chief operating officer of Silk Way West Airlines, expressed pleasure about the extended partnership. The agreement covers five Boeing 747-8 Freighters powered by GEnx-2B engines, six Boeing 777 Freighters powered by GE90-115Bs, and up to four future Boeing 777-8 Freighters powered by GE9X engines.
Silk Way West Airlines, currently handling an annual cargo turnover of over 500,000 tonnes and serving over 40 destinations across various regions, stands to benefit significantly from this partnership. The partnership is expected to support the airline's long-term strategy of sustainable growth and improved service provision to customers.
GE Aerospace commercial engines are designed to lower operating costs and reduce environmental impact, aligning with Silk Way West Airlines' commitment to sustainability. The company's engines are certified to operate on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blends, a step towards a greener future for aviation.
Lufthansa Technik has also signed an extension contract with Silk Way West Airlines for the maintenance of Boeing wide-body aircraft, further solidifying the partnership. The airline's network spans Europe, the CIS, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas, positioning it for continued growth and success in the global aviation market.
The modernisation strategy, announced in 2021 and 2022, is a testament to Silk Way West Airlines' forward-thinking approach and its dedication to providing top-notch service to its customers. The latest development in the partnership with GE Aerospace is expected to propel the airline into a new era of efficiency, sustainability, and growth.
