Avoid Transforming Minions into Live-Action Characters, if Possible
Going Minion-Mad, But Not Live-Action:
The Despicable Me franchise, driven by the beloved yellow Minions, shows no signs of slowing down. Despite the potential for a spawning spinoff universe, the mere idea of a live-action adaptation seems to be an undesirable prospect for Chris Renaud, co-director of Despicable Me 4.
In an interview with Film Hounds Magazine, Renaud declared bluntly, "God, I hope not... For me personally, not very appealing." While he admits it's uncertain if such a project is even on the table, he believes the Minions and their world are better defined by animation. He reasoning, "Animation allows us to get away with what we get away with...Locking a Minion in the vending machine, or blowing up Gru when he attacks Vector. These are really cartoon ideas, like what would have been in a Bugs Bunny cartoon."
Disney has been spearheading the live-action remake trend, but Universal is joining in, with a live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon planned for 2025[4]. However, at present, that's the only remake on Universal's horizon. Should the live-action dragon soar to impressive heights, the powers that be may take a keen interest in financially successful animated franchises like Despicable Me[1][3]. If that day comes, the Minions and Gru may find themselves in the spotlight for a live-action overhaul.
Fans can anticipate another Minions spinoff, slated for release on June 30, 2027[2].
