Chasing skies and battlefields: Belarus' military ambitions evolve

Step into the Brest region, where President Alexander Lukashenko envisions Belarus soaring high with its very own fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). But contrary to the ambitions of larger nations, Lukashenko sees a wiser path: creating several basic types of these aerial marvels, with potential future upgrades on the horizon.

"Let's not mimic the behemoths; what we need is a solid line-up of three to four UAV types," the head of state declared during a recent field meeting.

But what else can this ambitious republic dream up for its skies?

Lukashenko didn't hedge when it comes to diversifying Belarus' military arsenal. "It's essential to focus on other types of weapons too," he said, emphasizing the importance of ammunition, missiles, and enhancing all related items. "And, of course, we'll need the dough."

Crucial to these defense strategies is the development of electronic warfare tools to combat UAVs. "Après nous, le déluge," Lukashenko quipped, imagining a world where such an invention could render all UAVs obsolete: by powering a device that disrupts UAV functions and, quite simply, making them unnecessary.

Keeping the troops armed and armored

Body armor is another vital component of Belarus' military enhancements. Lukashenko recounted setting a past goal for his nation to produce enough armor to equip its armed forces—and, perhaps even more compellingly, for export. Achieving this ambitious goal, according to Lukashenko, requires a careful scientific approach and top-notch materials.

Evolving defense strategies

It's clear that Belarus has its sights set on more than just drones and body armor. The republic's focus is on expanding its military capabilities in a variety of strategic areas.

For instance, Belarus has been strengthening its national air defense by producing Buk-MB2K missile systems and intends to integrate Russian advanced hypersonic Oreshnik missiles into its military capabilities by 2025[1][4]. Furthermore, the acquisition of S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems from Russia and the integration of Iskander tactical missile systems are part of Belarus' broader military modernization efforts[5].

To bolster its airforce, Belarus has acquired Su-30SM and Su-30SM2 aircraft, as well as Mi-35 helicopters[5]. In addition, the republic has expressed interest in incorporating heavy flamethrower systems into its military, as demonstrated during the MILEX-2025 exhibition[5].

In all, Belarus' military development is centered around enhancing its air defense, missile capabilities, and forging strategic partnerships with Russia to fortify its military potential.

In line with Belarus' military ambitions, the need for technological advancements extends beyond unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Lukashenko emphasized the importance of focusing on various types of weapons, such as ammunition, missiles, and related items, while also acknowledging the necessity of financing these developments.

As Belarus evolves its defense strategies, it's not only drones and body armor that are in focus. The enhancement of electronic warfare tools, particularly for combating UAVs, plays a crucial role in these defense strategies.
