Bitcoin Acceptance Expansion: Swiss Savings Supermarkets to Embrace Cryptocurrency
In a groundbreaking move, Spar supermarkets in Switzerland have started accepting Bitcoin, Monero, and other cryptocurrencies as a form of payment. This marks a significant step in the wider adoption of digital currencies in retail.
The Spar supermarket in Kreuzlingen has already begun accepting Bitcoin payments, with plans to roll out the service across all Swiss Spar supermarkets soon. If everything goes smoothly, Spar could become the first supermarket chain in the country to accept Bitcoin nationwide. Monero payments are also welcomed at the Kreuzlingen store.
The service enabling these cryptocurrency payments is provided by DFX.swiss, a Swiss company that facilitates crypto payments through an "OpenCryptoQR" code. This code is scanned at checkout, and the payment is automatically converted into Swiss francs. The payment process is simple and efficient, making it easier than ever for customers to pay for their groceries with digital currencies.
Open Crypto Pay, the service provider handling the payments, is an "open, license-free standard for P2P crypto payments on all blockchains and with all crypto assets". This means that it can support a wide variety of cryptocurrencies, including those listed on Ethereum, such as Metamask, which is listed as "Coming Soon" for Open Crypto Pay.
The QR code used in the payment process is a static link to an address or invoice for Bitcoin payments. For payments made using the Lightning Network, customers simply need to scan a QR code displayed at the checkout. Spar supermarkets also offer LNURL for Lightning Network payments, further enhancing the convenience for customers.
Merchants can easily integrate crypto payments into their cash registers thanks to Open Crypto Pay's API interface to DFX. This makes it simple for businesses to adopt digital currencies as a payment method, potentially setting a precedent for wider adoption in retail.
