BMW: Analysts are fostering a favorable environment

In a bid to keep pace with electric vehicle pioneers like Tesla, BMW is introducing a new vehicle class, dubbed the 'New Class'. This strategic move is seen as a significant turning point for the German automaker, particularly in the competitive Chinese market.

BMW CEO, Oliver Zipse, has referred to the central computer chips powering the 'New Class' vehicles as "brain power". The company is focusing on four central computer chips, known as "Domain Controllers", to control the vehicles based on this new class.

Each of these Domain Controllers manages distinct functions. One, developed in-house, handles powertrain and driving dynamics. Another addresses automated driving, utilising Qualcomm's Snapdragon Ride System-on-Chips (SoCs). Additional modules control cabin management and vehicle dynamics, all interconnected via gigabit Ethernet for integrated task coordination. This architecture supports high-performance computing for Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) and flexible software deployment across domains.

The 'New Class' vehicles will have a solid foundation for major trends such as Autonomous Driving and Smart Cockpit. This foundation aims to position BMW favourably in the evolving automotive landscape.

The success of the 'New Class' is particularly important in China, where BMW aims to catch up with innovative competitors. A turnaround in China would be crucial for BMW, and analysts now view the company more positively compared to Mercedes-Benz or Volkswagen.

Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer from the CAR-Institut has stated that the acid test for vehicles based on the 'New Class' architecture will be China. The success of these vehicles in the Chinese market could determine BMW's competitive standing in the global electric vehicle race.

By 2027, BMW plans to introduce up to eight new models based on the 'New Class'. With this strategic move, BMW is positioning itself for the future of automotive technology, aiming to stay competitive with electric vehicle pioneers and innovators in the Chinese market.
