BMW's Newest Plant in Debrecen, Hungary, Ushering in a New Era of Automobile Production

The BMW Group has marked the official beginning of a new era in automobile production with the start of series production of the BMW iX3 at its newest and most innovative production site in Debrecen, Hungary. This state-of-the-art facility, a testament to BMW's iFactory vision, is set to revolutionise the industry with its focus on efficiency, innovation, and flexibility.

Headed by Hans-Peter Kemser, BMW Group Plant Debrecen has been meticulously planned and built to integrate 40 new models and model updates by the end of 2027. The plant does not have its own lead plant to orient itself towards, but instead combines the best from various sites worldwide as a network plant. Over 2,000 employees at the Debrecen plant can be trained within the network, enabling knowledge transfer from employees at different sites.

The Debrecen plant is the first BMW plant worldwide to produce the "Gen6" high-voltage batteries in series. While BMW continues to source individual battery cells from suppliers for its electric vehicles, the high-voltage battery assembly is located directly on the Debrecen plant site, following the "Local for Local" principle.

The iX3, the first model from BMW's electric vehicle platform "Neue Klasse", will be produced at the Debrecen plant. Many innovative systems and processes in the Debrecen plant are patented, reflecting BMW's commitment to cutting-edge technology.

Milan Nedeljković, the production board member of BMW AG, highlights the importance of the Debrecen plant in BMW's iFactory strategy. Besides the BMW Group plant in Steyr, which is the ideal location for the serial production of the "Gen6" high-voltage batteries, Debrecen will also be involved in efficient, digital, and sustainable production including battery assembly. This site is set to serve as a pilot plant for advanced production methods, with series production expected to begin by the end of 2025.

Capacities for the new iX3 will be gradually increased after the start of production. The iX3 offers the latest design and technology innovations that will shape the entire model range in the future. With its focus on efficiency, innovation, and flexibility, the Debrecen plant is poised to lead the way in sustainable and forward-thinking automobile production.
