British secret service MI6 initiates expansive campaign to enlist secret agents, specifically targeting individuals from Russia
The British intelligence agency, MI6, is set to unveil a new dark web portal named Silent Courier. This innovative platform, announced by the outgoing MI6 chief, Sir Richard Moore, during a speech in Istanbul on Friday, aims to make it easier for the agency to recruit potential agents in Russia and around the world.
The primary objective of Silent Courier is to boost national security by providing a secure avenue for individuals to submit sensitive information regarding terrorism or hostile intelligence activity. This portal is expected to play a crucial role in the face of the changing world and increasing threats, as stated by Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.
Sir Richard Moore is also expected to call on individuals with sensitive information on global instability, international terrorism, or hostile state intelligence activity to contact MI6 securely online. Instructions on how to use Silent Courier will be available on MI6's verified YouTube channel, run by an unidentified representative who will speak on Friday to announce the portal and present details about it.
While MI6's approach to using a dark web portal for recruiting spies is novel, it is not entirely unprecedented. The CIA launched a similar approach in 2023, targeting potential Russian spies through social media videos.
It's important to note that this announcement comes amidst the arrest of three individuals on suspicion of helping Russian intelligence, and separate current events such as the arrest of teenagers charged over a cyber attack on TfL (Transport for London), costing millions.
The launch of Silent Courier is a significant step for MI6, marking their commitment to modernising their methods in the face of growing global threats. The portal will be accessible from Friday, opening a virtual door for those with valuable information to share with the UK's intelligence agency.
