BSI Sets New Rules for Smart Meter Communication; SET Hub Drives Energy Innovation
The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) has issued guidelines dictating who can communicate with intelligent metering systems in Germany and under what conditions. Meanwhile, the SET Hub, an initiative promoting innovation in the energy sector, continues to connect start-ups and drive the energy transition.
BSI mandates that manufacturers and operators of Smart Meter Gateways must obtain certification to communicate with intelligent metering systems. This certification, based on technical guideline TR-03109, ensures comprehensive security measures. Operators must also adhere to security profiles under Common Criteria (CC) and use only approved components, as per legal mandates like §9b BSIG and §24 MsbG.
The SET Hub, operational since 2020, focuses on fostering digitalization, renewable energy, and innovation in the sector. It connects start-ups to promote business models and understanding of the legal framework, including the use of intelligent metering systems crucial for a digital energy system in Germany.
BSI's regulations ensure secure communication with intelligent metering systems, while the SET Hub continues to support and connect innovative start-ups, driving Germany's energy transition forward.
