Sparkasse Introduces Automatic Bonus Points Function for Girocard Users

Starting July 1, 2025, Sparkasse customers will be able to collect bonus points automatically when making purchases at participating merchants, such as Rewe, using their Girocard. This new function aims to simplify the loyalty program experience and reduce the number of cards in customers' wallets.

To take advantage of this feature, Girocard holders must register their card and consent to linking it to the promotion. Registration for a Payback customer account is also required. The process to link a Girocard with Payback involves logging into online banking or the Sparkasse app, selecting the Girocard, and following an automatic redirect to Payback.

Once registered, customers can pay and collect points with the same Girocard, eliminating the need to show the Payback app. The Payback customer number is used for recording booking dates and redeemed coupons to determine the current bonus point balance, which can be found at the end of the S-Vorteilwelt.

Data security is a top priority for Sparkasse, and this new function operates within a controlled environment with clear customer consent. Data processing is limited to necessary information for payment and points collection only, and customers can opt out if they object to data use. The system is designed with data protection compliance in mind, restricting how and where transaction data flows, especially to third parties.

However, as with any card-linked loyalty program, some experts remain cautious about privacy and data use. It is essential to maintain transparency and user control to address these concerns. It is worth noting that not all Sparkasse branches participate in the program, so not all Girocard holders will have access to this function.

In summary, Sparkasse's new Girocard bonus points function offers a seamless and secure way for customers to collect bonus points at participating merchants without the need for additional cards or apps. With data security measures in place and the option to opt out, customers can enjoy the benefits of the loyalty program with confidence.

Other technology integration allows for automatic links between Girocard and Payback accounts, simplifying the business process for Sparkasse customers. This development in finances also aims to encourage technology adoption in everyday transactions, reducing physical cards in wallets.
