Chess.com Confirms Data Breach Affecting Less Than 0.003% of Users
Chess.com, a prominent global chess platform, has confirmed a data breach that occurred between June 5 and June 18, 2021. Although the specific file transfer tool used and the exact information stolen remain unknown, the breach affected less than 0.003% of the platform's users, amounting to 4,541 individuals.
The breach was discovered by Chess.com on June 19, and federal law enforcement was promptly notified. The exposed data, which includes personal information, has not been found to be shared publicly online. The incident highlights vulnerabilities in file transfer tools, as seen in recent patches for Wing FTP and CrushFTP in July. Chess.com has not indicated that any banking information, usernames, or passwords were disclosed in the breach. The platform, which hosts 10 million games daily for over 100 million registered users, is now reviewing and strengthening its security measures in light of this incident.
While Chess.com has not found evidence of public exposure of the stolen data, the breach serves as a reminder of the importance of robust security measures for online platforms. The company is committed to enhancing its security protocols to prevent future incidents and protect its users' information.
