China Launches World's First Commercial Underwater Data Center
China has made waves in data center innovation with its first commercial underwater data center, now operational off the coast of Hainan province. This pioneering facility, launched in 2024, marks a significant step in the country's 14th Five-Year Plan, which includes proposals for more such structures.
The Hainan underwater data center, part of a pilot program allowing foreign full ownership, is particularly efficient due to its seawater cooling system. It houses 100 data cabins, each containing 24 server racks that can accommodate 400 to 500 servers, equating to the power of 30,000 high-end PCs. This state-of-the-art facility can process up to 7,000 AI queries per second, managing digital services like restaurant recommendations and travel apps.
Ten companies have already signed contracts to utilize this cutting-edge infrastructure for diverse applications, demonstrating the potential of underwater data centers for businesses worldwide.
China's underwater data center initiative, starting with the Hainan facility, showcases the country's commitment to innovative, efficient data management. With its successful launch and ten companies already on board, this technology is poised to reshape global data infrastructure.
