New MG4 Electric Hatchback with Semi-Solid-State Battery Arrives Internationally

The MG4 electric hatchback, equipped with semi-solid-state battery technology, is set to launch internationally, starting with pre-sales and production in China from mid-2025. The global rollout will include Europe, Mexico, and the Middle East.

The semi-solid-state battery variant of the MG4 has been cleared for sale in China by mid-August 2025, with an official launch scheduled for September 2025.

Key updates and enhancements based on MG S5 technology and other improvements include:

  • The MG4 is built on SAIC’s new E3 pure electric architecture, which offers better packaging and efficiency compared to the previous platform.
  • It features a larger body footprint, providing more interior space and refined styling. The length is 4,395 mm, width 1,842 mm, height 1,551 mm, and wheelbase 2,750 mm.
  • Powertrain: The semi-solid-state variant uses a manganese-based lithium-ion battery, enhancing efficiency and range.
  • Range: The semi-solid-state battery options offer CLTC ranges of approximately 437 km (42.8 kWh pack) and 530 km (53.9 kWh pack).
  • Potential tech features may include upgraded 360-degree cameras, front and rear radars, tinted roofs, privacy glass, and enhanced in-car tech systems.

The MG4 has already established itself in multiple markets with existing variants available in Europe, Mexico, and the Middle East. The new semi-solid-state battery version is confirmed for China, with plans to follow in global markets as part of SAIC’s global rollout.

The Chinese MG4 features a more subdued design with a rounded front end, smaller grille openings, less aggressive bumper detailing, and a slimmed-down MG badge. It initially launches with a conventional lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery.

The new MG4 is offered in four variants, and the semi-solid-state battery has passed rigorous triple-axis penetration testing. The claimed range under the Chinese Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) is up to 529 kilometres. The new MG4's weight is notably lighter than the European-spec model, weighing 1485kg compared to 1635kg.

Tech from the MG S5, such as a 12.8-inch touchscreen and improved physical controls, is expected to trickle across to the current MG4 later this year. The new MG4 shares little similarity with the UK and Australian-spec model.
