City authorities are deploying AI-based assistants at the Foreigners Department for seamless service delivery.
In a groundbreaking move, the city administration of Dormagen, North Rhine-Westphalia, has collaborated with a local developer to introduce an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant in their Foreigners' Office. This innovative AI solution is designed to streamline processes, relieve employees, and provide citizens with a faster service.
The AI assistant serves as a supporting tool in the verification process, automatically integrating numerous federal and state regulations into decision-making. This integration aims to make processing more efficient and legally secure, while the control and final decision remains with the employees.
The Foreigners' Office uses the ordinance database of the federal and state governments to access ordinances, administrative regulations, and legal provisions in foreigner law. The AI assistant is intended to help automatically integrate the multitude of state and federal ordinances into the decision-making process.
Thomas Hegenbarth, Chief Digital Officer, stated that the development is an important step in the city's AI initiative and Dormagen digitalization strategy. He emphasised that the city administration is acting as a digital pioneer within the municipal administration with the introduction of the AI assistant.
Fritz Bezold, First Deputy Mayor, shared similar sentiments, claiming that the city administration is setting an example with the AI assistant's implementation. The aim of the AI assistant is to provide a more efficient and secure service, ultimately benefiting the citizens of Dormagen.
The success of the AI project in the Foreigners' Office paves the way for the use of similar technologies in other specialist areas. The total costs for development and hardware amount to approximately 45,500 euros, all of which are covered by 100 percent state funding.
The city administration's AI assistant in the Foreigners' Office is one of the first administrations to use artificial intelligence to support case processing in this specific area. The project's significance lies in its knowledge, which can potentially benefit other administrations in North Rhine-Westphalia and beyond.
