Here Comes the Heavy Lift: 350-Ton Transformer Makes its Way through Castrop-Rauxel
It's all about the thin line as a 350-ton transformer finshes its watery journey along the Rhine-Herne Canal in Castrop-Rauxel.

A titanic spectacle on the Rhine-Herne Canal near the yacht harbor in Castrop-Rauxel - a steel-gray colossus reigns supreme on its own transport vehicle. This monolith weighs a colossal 350 tons. The scenario might be straight out of a sci-fi movie, but it's no fantasy - this is today's reality.
Water-filled Tanks for Stability
To keep the ship from tipping with its jaw-dropping load, the ballast tanks need to be flood-filled time and time again. The Rhine-Herne Canal has remained closed since Thursday morning for this very purpose.
Lively Spectator Scene
There's an audience gathering along the canal bank. Excitement is in the air as power company Amprion supplies bratwurst and beverages. Matthias Machinek, the project's spokesman, sums it up: "This is a spectacle. However, moving the transformer via the canal and back to land to the Poppinghausen substation is a logistical necessity."
Amprion: Transport Essential for Energy Transition
Amprion is refurbishing the Poppinghausen substation in the Castrop-Rauxel district to upgrade its capacity from 220 to 380 kV, corresponding to a power level of 380,000 volts. With the coal phase-out target of 2030 set by the state government, this move is vital for the region's energy support, according to Amprion.
Citizen Opposition Quelled
For years, a citizens' initiative championed against power line expansion. However, the last petition deadline has passed. In January, the Münster district government authorized Amprion's application, finally closing the book on a lengthy review.
Scheduled Completion Until Late Afternoon
The mammoth transformer will laboriously roll onto land in a slow, controlled procession: remoted controlled on its 30-wheeled heavy-duty vehicle. From there, it's just 600 meters to the substation. The Rhine-Herne Canal and the adjacent street in the Poppinghausen district will stay closed at least until late Thursday afternoon, as per Amprion's estimate.
