In the rapidly expanding global electric vehicle (EV) market, Tesla Model Y, BYD Song, and Tesla Model 3 continue to dominate the battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sector, according to recent data.
Tesla Model Y remains the undisputed leader in BEV sales, maintaining its top position since previous years, including 2022-2024. BYD Song, on the other hand, has shown impressive growth, securing the second spot and confirming BYD Auto as the top global BEV seller in Q1 2025. Tesla Model 3 holds a stable third place with a significant sales lead over competitors like the BYD Seagull and Geely Xingyue.
These three models form the "podium" of global BEV sales, with little change expected by the end of the year. Notably, BYD has made a strong showing, with multiple models making up half of the top 20 BEVs, demonstrating the brand's aggressive expansion in the market.
In the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) market, BYD has also controlled much of the market, holding all of the top five positions and eight of the top 10 places in the first four months of 2025. The BYD Song Plus was the best-selling PHEV globally in April, with a 29% year-on-year increase in sales.
Other key players in the PHEV market include the Li Auto L6, which took fourth place globally, and the Wuling Bingo, which returned to the top 10 in the global BEV market. The global new BEV market grew by 39.4% year on year in April, with 1.03 million units delivered, while the PHEV market saw a 34% increase, with 567,986 deliveries.
The US accounted for just 9.8% of global BEV sales in the first four months of 2025, with China leading the way in both global BEV and PHEV registrations between January and April.
In summary, the global EV market continues to grow rapidly, with projections for 2025 sales to surpass 20 million units worldwide, driven mainly by China, Europe, and the USA markets. Tesla Model Y, BYD Song, and Tesla Model 3 are the top-selling BEVs globally, while BYD dominates the PHEV market.
