Copia's Food Donation Platform Aids JAG, Fights Waste and Hunger

Copia, a tech startup, is transforming the way restaurants handle food donations. By automating and streamlining the process, Copia is making it easier for restaurants to donate surplus food to those in need. The José André Group (JAG) has already redirected about 4,000 pounds of food using Copia, preventing approximately 12,591 pounds of carbon emissions.

Copia's platform matches restaurants with surplus food to nonprofits in need, scheduling convenient pickups and generating automatic receipts. This not only helps feed the hungry but also reduces food waste, which contributes significantly to climate change. Nearly 40% of U.S. food production goes uneaten, creating methane emissions.

The Internal Revenue Service allows businesses to factor in labor, utility, and packaging costs into the value of food donations, making it a tax-deductible process. Copia is available in 43 states, Canada, and Puerto Rico, with plans to expand its reach. Currently, around 30 restaurant chains use the Copia platform, including The Cheesecake Factory and True Food Kitchen, as well as various hotel brands.

With Copia, restaurants can efficiently donate surplus food to nonprofits, reducing waste and helping feed the estimated 47.4 million Americans living in food-insecure households. JAG's successful implementation of Copia's technology is a testament to the platform's potential. As Copia continues to expand, it aims to make a significant dent in the food waste problem and alleviate hunger across the United States and beyond.
