Devoted to Canon EOS R5 for half a decade: an unyielding commitment to never part ways with this camera

==================================================================

Five years after its launch, the Canon EOS R5 remains a standout choice for photographers seeking exceptional still photography performance. With its 45MP full-frame sensor, excellent autofocus, high frame rates, and unique 400MP multi-shot composite mode, the EOS R5 is considered one of Canon's best high-resolution mirrorless cameras for landscapes, portraits, and studio work.

Despite being surpassed by newer models in raw resolution and some AI features, the EOS R5 continues to shine due to its standout stills performance, colour science, and proven reliability. The camera's durability and excellent handling, coupled with its stellar in-body image stabilization system, make it a favourite among professionals who prioritize image quality and autofocus precision.

The EOS R5's video capabilities are strong, with 8K 30p recording, but overheating issues limit prolonged video use, a compromise widely noted since launch. In direct comparison with the Sony A7R V, the EOS R5 holds up well for image quality and autofocus, but the Sony offers a higher 61MP resolution sensor and slightly more advanced AI subject detection autofocus.

The Canon EOS R5 Mark II, launched in 2024, improves upon some features but notably removes the 400MP multi-shot mode in favour of AI-based upscaling. The Mark II is particularly superior for sports photography and pro video, making it an attractive option for those with specific needs.

For those who prefer the original EOS R5, its unique features such as the 400MP multi-shot high-resolution mode and stellar in-body image stabilization system set it apart. Some photographers, including the author, have a strong preference for the EOS R5 over the Mark II for most photography needs.

The author has had a 5-year relationship with the EOS R5 and plans to continue owning it for the foreseeable future. The author prefers the EOS R5 over the EOS R5 Mark II for most photography needs and has had great results using vintage Helios lenses and older DSLR glass on the EOS R5. The author also has a strong preference for the best Canon RF lenses, specifically mentioning the RF 85mm f/1.2 and RF 85mm f/1.2 DS versions.

The EOS R5 was pre-ordered by the author and received at launch, making them one of only two customers to do so. Despite production and shipping delays due to COVID-19, the EOS R5 was launched on July 09, 2020, and has been the most dependable camera body the author has ever used, performing consistently in various shooting conditions and storage formats.

The EOS R5 was the first consumer camera to capture 8K videos and features an 8K Frame Grab, allowing it to take high-quality still images from its videos. Although newer models have outpaced the EOS R5 in some areas, it continues to be a top-tier mirrorless camera in 2025, favoured by professionals who prioritize image quality and autofocus precision over maximum megapixels or video thermal performance.
