DFDS Unveils Ambitious Expansion Plans: Battery Vessels, Turkey-EU Growth

DFDS, a leading shipping and logistics company, has revealed ambitious plans to expand its operations and services. The company aims to introduce battery-powered vessels on Channel crossings and expects significant growth in transport between Turkey and Europe.

DFDS is set to operate up to six battery-powered vessels on Channel crossings between Europe and the UK by 2030, with the first two in service by the end of the decade. This move aligns with the company's commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint.

The company also anticipates a 14% growth in the transport sector between Turkey and Europe up to 2028. To capitalize on this growth, DFDS will add road transport to its Mediterranean ferry network, enhancing its intermodal logistics connections across Europe. This expansion will enable the company to offer end-to-end transport solutions between Turkey and Europe, including distribution services and warehousing.

In a strategic move, DFDS has ordered 100 Volvo electric trucks for deployment across Europe. This almost doubles the company's fleet of electric trucks, demonstrating its commitment to sustainable road transport. Meanwhile, Ekol, a Turkish logistics company, reported a revenue of €470m in 2023 from its international transport network.

DFDS' expansion plans, including the introduction of battery-powered vessels and the growth of its Mediterranean ferry network, reflect the company's confidence in the future of European transport. With the CEO, Torben Carlsen, believing that Turkey's role as a manufacturing hub for Europe will strengthen due to nearshoring, DFDS is well-positioned to capitalize on these opportunities.
