Digital Theft Drama in Ghana: Exploring the Growth of Online Fraud in a Compelling Stage Production
On May 2, 2025, the National Theatre in Accra will play host to a powerful new play titled CYBER HEIST. This theatrical production is set to raise awareness about online scams and empower audiences to protect themselves and others against cybercrime.
Written by Nii Ayi Solomon and directed by WK Dziewornu-Norvor, CYBER HEIST is a joint initiative by the Ghana Fintech and Payments Association, CyberBells Foundation, FinTech Management Solutions, and Village Minds Production. The play is a national awareness effort aimed at combating the growing issue of cybercrime in Ghana.
In recent years, cybercrime has become a significant concern in Ghana. According to data from the Cybercrime Unit, Ghana lost a staggering GHS 59.9 million to cybercrime in 2023, a figure that rose to GHS 70.6 million by April 2024. Notably, investment scams increased from GHS 421K in 2023 to GHS 1.9M in 2024.
The rapid digitalisation of financial services, particularly mobile money platforms, has created opportunities for fraudsters to exploit vulnerabilities. The expansion of mobile money services without strong verification and regulatory systems has led to a surge in mobile money fraud cases, with 7,250 cases recorded in 2023, marking a 32% increase over 2022.
CYBER HEIST aims to address this issue by providing audiences with a behind-the-scenes look at common scams and offering practical tips for securing personal data and financial information. The play will premiere at 6:00 PM and will be staged by Janet Naa Ashaley Armah.
Tickets for the play can be purchased by dialing 71333*092# or visiting Egotickets. Single tickets cost GHS 150, while double tickets cost GHS 280. Fintech leaders, cybersecurity professionals, and forward-thinking brands are invited to support the production through sponsorships. For sponsorship, contact Martin at +233 24 133 9037 or [email protected].
The play is part of a broader effort to combat cybercrime in Ghana. Strengthening regulatory frameworks and enforcement, enhancing public awareness campaigns, technology-based defenses, protection of mobile money agents, and international cooperation and intelligence sharing are all critical to reducing vulnerabilities and tackling cross-border cybercrime.
Join the fight against cybercrime by attending CYBER HEIST at the National Theatre on May 2, 2025. Together, we can empower ourselves and others to navigate the digital world safely.
