Drei Youngsters aus Dresden gewinnen Kodierungswettbewerb von Apple
Winning an Apple Competition with a Dementia Simulation App
Meet Hendrik Schulke, a Dresden student, who triumphed in an Apple programming contest with his innovative creation, "Dementi". This ingenious app offers a look into the struggles of individuals battling dementia, through a 16-image memory game. With a twist, however, every three moves, the images shift places, mimicking the confusion and disorientation one encounters when living with the condition.
Drawing inspiration from his grandmother's dementia, Schulke aimed to create an emotional learning experience. As he puts it, "You think you're the problem, but it only works once." His goal is to see children using it to grasp the day-to-day hardships their relatives with dementia may face. Besides, the app includes information about dementia.
At 25, Schulke is a media informatics master's student, developing apps during his semester abroad in Vietnam. His standout creation drew Apple CEO Tim Cook's admiration during the WWDC conference, with Cook highlighting its potential to foster empathy and improve interpersonal understanding. (dpa)
