Flying Food with a New Twist: Deliveroo and Manna Take to the Dublin Skies
Deliveroo is partnering with drone delivery company Manna to bring aerial dining to Dublin's residents. This innovative venture marks the beginning of drone deliveries within the city.
Kickstarting this exciting test phase shortly, Deliveroo aims to cater to customers within a 3km radius of Blanchardstown. This groundbreaking service allows food enthusiasts to relish offerings from their favorite local eateries in merely three minutes, once the order is ready.
The ambitious plan includes expanding the service to numerous restaurants and venturing into grocery and retail deliveries within the next six months. Manna drones, deploying from their local delivery hub, will zoom at breathtaking speeds of up to 80 km/h.
Upon arrival, the drone descends courtesy of a secure, biodegradable tether, usually landing in a driveway or garden.
"We're thrilled about drones revolutionizing our delivery landscape, complementing our current rider model. If successful, we envision expanding this aerial culinary journey across Ireland and beyond!" shared Carlo Mocci, Deliveroo's Chief Business Officer.
Manna has already completed over 170,000 delivery flights in Dublin, indicating their commitment to efficient, swift, and clean air deliveries.
However, not everyone is excited about this sky-high dining experience. Neighbors in the Dublin 15 area have raised concerns over the noise generated by frequent drone deliveries, likening it to a lawnmower or moped. Intrusive and bothersome, these concerns call for attention.
Privacy issues have also surfaced due to the cameras on Manna's drones. These concerns have fueled demands for tighter regulations in the sector.
Addressing these issues head-on, Manna has devised strategies to reduce noise levels, employing quieter propellers and adjusting flight paths to minimize disturbance. To alleviate privacy concerns, Manna ensures that their cameras are employed solely for safety purposes, confirming that the delivery zone is clear of obstacles. These cameras do not record, store, or transmit any data, and are compliant with data protection regulations.
Engaging in extensive dialogue with local residents and groups, Manna places community concerns at the forefront. The company is open to further regulations, committed to ensuring a harmonious coexistence between drone deliveries and the community.
Technology will revolutionize Deliveroo's delivery landscape, with Manna drones utilizing advanced mechanisms to cater to customers swiftly and efficiently. As these drones employ quieter propellers and adjust flight paths, they aim to minimize noise pollution, addressing concerned neighbors' issues.
