In a significant leap towards smart aviation, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has taken a step forward in commercial drone technology. The state-owned defense company EDGE and Dubai-based manufacturer EANAN have both established factories for the production of drones for commercial purposes, making the UAE the first in the country to do so.

EANAN's factory, located in the UAE, is the first of its kind in the country, manufacturing drones for commercial purposes. The company aims to shift to fully local production and sell these drones to different countries, catering to their unique needs.

One such example of this innovative technology is the drone used in a recent trial conducted by Abu Dhabi Mobility, in collaboration with LODD Autonomous. This drone was fitted with a robotic arm and an advanced navigation system, demonstrating the potential for these machines to revolutionise various industries.

The trial, which took place in June, saw a drone-based delivery from Al Samha to Khalifa Industrial Zone in Abu Dhabi. The operation was backed by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) and conducted by aviation technology firm LODD and logistics holding group 7X.

This was not the first drone delivery trial in Abu Dhabi. Nearly three months prior, a successful delivery using a winch-based system was carried out. The city of Dubai officially launched drone deliveries of medicines and parcels as early as October 2024, with Keeta Drone being awarded the first licence to deliver products in Dubai Silicon Oasis (DS) in the same month. The initial stage saw six drones in operation.

LODD in Abu Dhabi is set to commence parcel and cargo deliveries using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the second half of 2026. This move further solidifies the UAE's position as a leader in smart aviation through drone manufacturing.

The UAE's commitment to drone technology is clear, with these trials and factory openings marking a significant milestone in the country's technological advancement. As these drones continue to be developed and integrated into everyday life, the UAE is poised to lead the way in this exciting and rapidly evolving field.
