Dresden's New Bus Departure Countdown Service: A Step Towards Efficient Public Transport

Dresden Public Transport (DVB) is currently testing a new service aimed at enhancing the efficiency and convenience of bus travel in the city. The new departure countdown service, specific to bus lines 68 and 81, will provide real-time countdown information for departures, allowing passengers to plan their journeys more effectively.

The trial, which begins on Monday, September 25, is made possible by the technical capabilities of electric buses, which are equipped with on-board computers of the latest generation. The new service will be implemented at stops where there are currently no electronic departure signs.

The system is designed to display the exact waiting time until the next bus arrives, either through a digital display or an integrated app feature. The precise details of the user interface and technical specifications have yet to be publicly disclosed. However, it is likely that the new service will utilise existing data query technologies similar to those used in other German public transport departure info systems.

The service is partially funded by the federal and state governments, with approximately 75% of the costs covered. The total costs for hardware and software are estimated to be around 2 million euros.

During the trial period, passengers will no longer need to ask about departure times at the stops. Instead, they will be able to see the departure countdown on the modern buses' displays. It is important to note that this service is a trial, and its success may lead to modifications or potential continuation, while failure may result in discontinuation.

This initiative is a step towards improving public transport usability in Dresden, making it more accessible and efficient for all its citizens. Further details about the launch dates, feedback mechanisms, and the technology platform behind DVB’s test deployment for lines 68 and 81 will be revealed in due course.
