Justairtech's Journey Towards Commercializing an Energy-Efficient Cooling System

Efficient refrigeration sans chemicals: Justairtech banks on air as its refrigerant of choice

Justairtech, a Munich-based startup, is making strides in transitioning their prototype into a market-ready product. The company is facing challenges and taking steps towards commercialization, with a focus on data centers, precision cooling, process cooling, and later heating and air conditioning.

The startup's cooling system is expected to be 4-5 times more efficient than comparable state-of-the-art systems, a significant leap in energy savings. This efficiency is achieved through the use of air as a refrigerant, a novel approach in the cooling and air conditioning industry.

Justairtech's founders, Jens and Holger, met at a previous startup and formed a strong team with complementary profiles and competencies. Holger, in particular, has a background in water cooling and developed a cooling machine that cools with water but achieves double the efficiency of existing cooling machines.

The cooling system's innovative design includes two highly efficient and low-pressure drop heat exchangers with a novel, fractal design. These heat exchangers are additively manufactured and have a surface area multiple that of a conventional heat exchanger due to their very fine helix structure.

In the upcoming year, two beta test systems will be placed in data centers for field tests. This will provide valuable insights into the system's performance under real-world conditions, helping Justairtech refine their design and operation.

Justairtech values security in the areas of personnel and financing, preferring stability over excitement. They find the offers for founders in Munich beneficial, particularly in terms of cooperation opportunities and technical graduates from the university network.

The company is aware of the risks associated with a complete technical new development and has strategies to reduce or manage remaining risks. They are committed to navigating the challenges of technical validation, prototyping and scalability, market acceptance, regulatory compliance, funding, and business development.

Upon successful market entry, expected within the next five years, Justairtech's cooling system will play a crucial role in achieving climate neutrality in Europe by 2050 and reducing CO2 emissions. The system is not only energy-efficient but also environmentally friendly, using a refrigerant that does not contribute to global warming.

While Justairtech has not utilized many of the offers primarily aimed at young teams in Munich, they have formed strategic partnerships to aid in their development. One such partnership is with EOS, which has helped Justairtech reduce the printing time for their 25kW heat exchanger from 19 days in 2021 to approximately 24 hours.

Justairtech's journey towards commercialization is a testament to their commitment to innovation and sustainability. As they continue to refine their cooling system and prepare for market entry, they are poised to make a significant impact in the cooling and air conditioning industry.

  1. Justairtech's cooling system, which is more efficient than existing systems by 4-5 times, could revolutionize the air conditioning and cooling industry given its use of air as a refrigerant and innovative harvest-and-release heat exchanger design, acknowledging the urgent need for climate neutrality by 2050 and environmental-science-driven solutions.
  2. Beyond energy savings, Justairtech's novel approach aims to minimize climate-change impacts, utilizing a refrigerant that does not contribute to global warming, positioning their business at the intersection of science, technology, finance, and the environmental-science-focused business sphere.
  3. In the competitive market landscape, Justairtech's strategic partnerships, such as the one with EOS, prove instrumental in scaling their production process, reducing printing time significantly, adding realistic business strategies to their commitment towards commercializing the energy-efficient cooling system and making inroads in the start-up-centric Munich ecosystem.
