Electric vehicle sales for GM surge by a staggering 115% in July, propelled by the popular Equinox EV model
In a significant shift in consumer behaviour, the Chevrolet Equinox EV has become the top-selling non-Tesla electric vehicle (EV) in the U.S., marking a record-breaking month with over 8,500 units sold in July 2025[1][2][4]. This impressive achievement reflects a 115% year-over-year increase for General Motors (GM), contributing significantly to the company's best-ever EV sales month in the U.S.[1][2]
The Chevrolet Equinox EV, part of GM's expanding electric vehicle lineup, offers an appealing SUV design, competitive pricing starting below $35,000, and a remarkable range of up to 319 miles (514 km)[1][2]. These factors have attracted new buyers, including those switching from other brands[1][2].
Other models in GM's electric vehicle lineup also contributed to the company's electric growth in July 2025. However, the Chevrolet Equinox EV's sales figure far outweighed those of other non-Tesla EVs in the market.
According to data for leading non-Tesla EVs in 2025, the Chevrolet Equinox EV has sold over 36,000 units through July, more than any other non-Tesla EV[4]. The Ford Mustang Mach-E follows closely with approximately 27,093 units sold so far in 2025, while the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Honda Prologue trail behind with about 24,910 and 22,635 units sold respectively[4].
The EV market in the U.S. reached a record first half in 2025 with over 607,000 electric vehicles sold, although Q2 sales dipped slightly compared to the previous year[3][5]. The approaching expiration of the federal $7,500 tax credit at the end of September 2025 is boosting demand temporarily.
The Chevrolet Equinox EV qualifies for this tax credit, making it an even more attractive option for mass-market buyers. It's an affordable and practical choice, offering the benefits of electric technology without the high price tag often associated with EVs.
In addition to the Chevrolet Equinox EV's success, GM's luxury brand, Cadillac, has also made strides in the EV market. Cadillac had 25% of its total sales being electric in the first half of 2025, and the brand has the highest EV share among luxury brands, according to GM[6].
As the EV market continues to grow and evolve, it's clear that the Chevrolet Equinox EV is leading the charge for non-Tesla electric vehicles in the U.S. market.
