Eliminating a distinct design element that sets the phones' appearance apart is reportedly underway.

In a surprising turn of events, British tech company Nothing has announced that its upcoming flagship, the Nothing Phone 3, will not feature the iconic Glyph lights interface. The announcement was made on May 29, 2025, through a video posted on the company's official platform.

The Glyph lights, a distinctive circular, monochrome dot-matrix display, have been a key feature of the Nothing Phone series. This interactive element, roughly coin-sized with about 489 pixels arranged in a 25x25 LED grid, contributes to the phone's unique "geeky industrial" look. It showcases call notifications, time, battery status, and pixel-style animations, setting the Nothing phones apart from their competitors.

However, it seems that the Nothing Phone 3 is set to break new ground. Teaser videos suggest that the device may feature a "dot-matrix display" on the back, potentially replacing the Glyph lights interface. This new display could offer more utility than just plain light strips, potentially being used for custom notifications, timers, charging indicators, and backfill lights during photo/video capture.

It's still unclear what Nothing plans to replace the Glyph lights with on the Phone 3. The company has hinted about the upcoming Nothing Phone 3, but no concrete details about the replacement have been revealed yet.

The Nothing Phone 3 is set to launch in July 2025, marking a significant departure from the current design if the Glyph Matrix is indeed removed. No confirmed rumours suggest a forthcoming replacement with a differently styled dot-matrix display; the existing Glyph Matrix remains a unique hallmark of the device.

The removal of the Glyph lights could mean that the Nothing Phone 3 may not have rear lights, a feature that was unique to Nothing phones. This change could indicate a shift in design philosophy for the brand, making the Nothing Phone 3 a device to watch out for in the second half of 2025.
