In the latest issue of N-Photo: The Nikon Magazine (issue 155), acclaimed photographer Nigel A Ball shares his expertise on capturing stunning butterfly flight sequences using the Nikon Z8.

For those who don't want to invest in an interchangeable-lens system but love wildlife photography, the Nikon P1100 is a recommended choice. However, for those seeking a more advanced option, the Nikon Z8, though two years old, is considered by Ball to be a camera that could remain in the kit bag for a decade at least.

Ball's approach to capturing butterfly flight sequences with the Nikon Z8 leverages the camera's advanced autofocus, high-speed shooting, and Pre-Release Capture. To get started, enable Pre-Release Capture and assign it to back-button focus for quick activation.

Next, configure AF settings. In the 'Focus Tracking with Lock-on' custom setting, set 'Blocked Shot AF Response' to Quick and 'Subject Motion' to Erratic to maintain focus on unpredictable butterfly moves. Use a fast frame rate (up to 120fps) to capture rapid wing beats and flight sequences. Choose a fast shutter speed (1/2500s or higher) to freeze motion and avoid blur.

To anticipate and frame shots effectively, observe butterfly flight behavior (takeoff direction, timing) beforehand. Stabilize your camera with a tripod or steady hand to avoid camera shake during bursts.

In post-processing, Ball uses a soft, black brush to paint through to the butterflies on the layers below. The editor of the article uses Adobe Lightroom for global edits and then imports the sequence into a Photoshop document. The layers in the Photoshop document are aligned before a layer mask is applied to each image, except for the base layer.

Ball, a long-time Nikon user and photography educator, was introduced to photography in the early 1970s by his father and now uses a state-of-the-art Nikon Z8. He specializes in capturing the natural world, particularly macro photography and astrophotography.

As Ball's work suggests, Nikon might be becoming cool again in the photography world. Whether you're a seasoned photographer or just starting out, the Nikon Z8 offers a powerful tool for capturing the beauty of the natural world.
