Energy firm, Envision Energy, commissioned to construct and deploy two large-scale battery energy storage projects, each with a capacity of 100 MWh, at a field location in Scotland.
Scotland Sees the Beginning of Two Major Battery Energy Storage Projects
Two significant battery energy storage projects, each offering 100 MWh of capacity and 50 MW of power, are set to transform Scotland's energy landscape. The Holmston project in South Ayrshire and the Drum Farm project near Keith are underway, with construction commencing this summer for Holmston and slated for early autumn for Drum Farm.
Envision Energy, a leader in renewable energy solutions, has been contracted to deliver these projects for Field, a key player in the UK's energy sector. Amit Gudka, CEO of Field, expressed his enthusiasm, stating that these projects demonstrate Envision Energy's deep commitment to supporting grid stability and accelerating the transition to renewables with safe, reliable, and scalable energy solutions.
Each facility will house a 50 MW / 100 MWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) containerized battery energy storage system. These systems are designed for safety, reliability, and long-term value, providing critical grid flexibility services, supporting grid stability, alleviating local transmission constraints, and accelerating renewable energy integration in Scotland and the UK.
Henry Peng, Senior Vice President and President of Latin America and European Region at Envision Energy, highlighted the strategic importance of Scotland for Envision’s growth in the UK energy storage market. He noted that the collaboration with Field demonstrates trust in Envision Energy's technical expertise and proven solutions across battery energy storage.
These projects are expected to significantly expand energy storage across the U.K. and play a vital role in enabling a more sustainable energy system. By providing vital flexibility services in a part of the grid subject to significant constraints, they will support the transition to a flexible and resilient net-zero future.
Envision Energy will provide a 15-year long-term service agreement for these energy storage solutions, underscoring a long-term commitment to the project. The projects are part of the U.K.'s renewable energy transition, helping accelerate the integration of renewable generation while delivering essential capabilities such as grid-forming, black start functionality, and ancillary services that strengthen overall grid performance.
As these projects progress, they will undoubtedly contribute to a more sustainable, flexible, and resilient power system in Scotland and the UK, marking a significant step forward in the country's renewable energy transition.
