Powering Up Somozas: Naturgy's Wind Farm Revamp with Vestas
Enhanced Efficiency, Amplified Output: How Wind Turbine Innovations Reshape the Somozas Wind Farm in Spain
Get ready for a major makeover at the Somozas Wind Farm in A Coruña, Spain! In partnership with Vestas, Naturgy is set to overhaul this wind farm as part of their strategic repowering initiative. Say goodbye to 81 old turbines and hello to a sleek nine modern, high-efficiency machines!
The new lineup includes seven V150-6.0 MW turbines and two V110-2.2 MW turbines, all backed by a 10-year AOM 4000 service agreement. Despite reducing the installed capacity from 49.6 MW to approximately 46.4 MW, the revamped Somozas Wind Farm is predicted to churn out a whopping 168 GWh annually—enough to keep the lights on for about 48,000 homes!
Sustaining the Environment While Upgrading
This project Prioritizes the green to its core by reusing existing infrastructure like roads, evacuation systems, and buildings. Decommissioning will manage over 10.5 million kilograms of materials, with about 75% being steel, 17% cement and aggregates, and the rest consisting of copper and fiberglass.
In addition, the electrical substation will undergo an upgrade to accommodate the new turbine configuration. To minimize the environmental impact, Naturgy will also conduct ecological restoration efforts in surrounding areas.
A Triple-Threat for Renewable Energy in Galicia
The Somozas Wind Farm project isn't the only repowering project Naturgy has lined up in Galicia. Monte Redondo and the Novo Wind Farm are also on the agenda, with plans to replace 66 and 25 turbines respectively. These projects showcase Naturgy's dedication to building a more efficient and sustainable energy system.
With advanced turbine technology and a focus on sustainability, the revamped Somozas Wind Farm stands tall as a testament to how we can generate more energy with fewer machines, paving the way for a greener future.
The EU's Vote of Confidence for Greener Energy
This €67 million project is supported by the European Union's NextGenerationEU program, underscoring the EU's commitment to green energy and sustainability. By embracing new technology and focusing on efficiency, projects like the Somozas Wind Farm help drive Southern Europe towards a more renewable future.
