Enhancing Hybrid SDI/IP Production Capabilities in Video Control Rooms, as Offered by Riedel

French systems integrator, Videlio Events, has adopted Riedel Communication's MediorNet HorizoN platform to establish innovative hybrid SDI/IP production environments. This deployment marks a significant step forward in the broadcast industry's migration towards IP-based workflows, while preserving the dependability of traditional SDI systems.

Over the course of a decade-long partnership, Riedel has consistently demonstrated its dedication to addressing Videlio's challenges, solidifying its role as a trusted advisor in Videlio's technological evolution. Videlio has implemented three autonomous flyaway video control rooms, centered around MediorNet HorizoN. This technology offers IP gateways, UDX and SDR/HDR conversion, alongside MediorNet MicroN UHD for routing and multiviewing.

Commenting on the development, Vincent Varoquier, Technical Director at Videlio Events, stated: "Our experience with Riedel's MediorNet family, particularly HorizoN, has revolutionized our production capabilities. The platform's decentralized architecture and robust processing power condensed into a compact 1RU form factor have dramatically simplified our signal management, reducing setup times from hours to minutes. This hybrid solution enables us to embrace IP technology at our own pace, prioritizing operational benefits while ensuring a comfortable transition for our teams to new workflows."

MediorNet's modular architecture facilitates the independent operation of control rooms or their interconnection in various combinations, irrespective of physical proximity. Videlio can easily assemble and interconnect flyaway video control rooms in various combinations, even when separated by considerable distances. This capability considerably enhances Videlio's adaptability to diverse production scenarios and video format requirements with minimal preparation time.

In a bid to manage these production islands effortlessly, operators can leverage Riedel's MediorMind orchestration layer to handle preconfigured nodes and save multi-viewer layouts across the network. This results in flexible independent operation or seamless interconnection, catering to a range of production scenarios.

The deployment of Riedel's MediorNet Horizon platform equips Videlio with a comprehensive solution that transforms production workflows. By drastically simplifying signal management, the system minimizes complex cabling from up to 100 cables to just two, facilitating faster setup and teardown while liberating valuable space in flyaway kits. Constructed with a hybrid approach that supports both SDI and SMPTE-2110 technologies, the platform allows Videlio to gradually adopt IP capabilities without disturbing existing operational workflows.

During two major events in 2024 – the multi-sport opening ceremonies in Paris and the WorldSkills competition in Lyon – Videlio successfully redeployed assets from Paris to Lyon within just five days. The Horizon-enabled control rooms offered high-quality support for both live and prerecorded broadcast elements, further solidifying Videlio's position as a leader in live production by enabling them to meet demanding schedules while maintaining premium service quality for clients.

Riedel's Regional Sales Director for Southern Europe, Franck Berger, remarked, "Videlio's deployment of MediorNet Horizon typifies our commitment to providing solutions that address real-world production challenges. By offering a hybrid SDI/IP platform, we've empowered Videlio to streamline their operations, reduce complexity, and prepare the groundwork for a controlled transition to IP-based workflows. This implementation illustrates how technology can bolster production teams to maintain operational excellence while adopting new capabilities at their own pace."

  1. The MediorNet Horizon platform, adopted by Videlio Events, offers data-and-cloud-computing technology with features such as IP gateways, UDX and SDR/HDR conversion, and MediorNet MicroN UHD for routing and multiviewing.
  2. Videlio's deployment of Riedel's MediorNet Horizon equips them with a technological solution that seamlessly integrates and transitions traditional SDI systems to IP-based workflows, while preserving stability and accommodating a gradual adoption of IP technology at their own pace.
