Ethereum's Pectra Hard Fork Promises Major Network Upgrades in March 2025
Ethereum is set to undergo a significant upgrade with the upcoming Pectra hard fork, scheduled for March 2025. This update, named after a constellation, promises to bring more than 20 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) to enhance the network's functionality and efficiency.
Pectra, like all hard forks, will create a new blockchain incompatible with the previous one. One of the key changes includes Peer Data Availability Sampling (PeerDAS), a feature that will distribute data verification among multiple nodes. This will reduce the load on individual nodes and improve the network's overall efficiency. PeerDAS is set to be implemented during the Fusaka hard fork later this year or early next.
The Pectra hard fork will also double the number of blobs per slot from three to six, increasing ethereum price availability. Moreover, it will introduce intelligent accounts (EIP-7702), allowing existing accounts to migrate to intelligent accounts with a single click. This will simplify interactions with the Ethereum network and enable advanced features like social recovery and native multi-signatures, eliminating the need to sign two transactions.
To further improve network efficiency and decentralization, Pectra will increase the maximum staking limit per validator from 32 ETH to 2048 ETH.
The successful adoption of Pectra will depend on a smooth implementation and the continued collaboration and commitment of Ethereum's community. With its promise of increased efficiency, improved scalability, and enhanced user experience, Pectra is set to be a significant milestone in Ethereum's journey.
