EU Enhances Digital Identity Security and Interoperability with eIDAS 2.0
The EU Commission has taken significant steps to enhance digital identity security and interoperability across Europe. The eIDAS 2.0 regulation, introduced in 2024, has updated the framework to include the EUDI Wallet, enabling secure cross-border use of identity data.
Previously, national differences in eID systems hindered the use of eIDAS 910/2014 due to lack of interoperability. However, the new eIDAS 2.0 has developed uniform standards, creating interoperability, trust, and legal certainty in digital identities. This is crucial for secure and legally binding digital transactions.
The EU Commission initiated the organization 'CEN and CENELEC' in 2024 to establish standardization for the EUDI Wallet. This ensures interoperability, trustworthiness, and legal certainty for the use of digital identities and trust services across European countries. When these standards are referenced in implementing acts, they become binding; otherwise, they create a presumption of conformity.
The eIDAS regulation 910/2014 laid the foundation for a European framework for electronic signatures and trust services. The updated eIDAS 2.0, along with the EUDI Wallet, further strengthens this framework, promoting secure and seamless digital identity use across countries in Europe.
