Europe's First Defence Processor Athena1 Set for Late 2027 Launch
Europe's first watch processor, Athena1, is set to hit the market in late 2027. Produced by Taiwanese giant TSMC, the chip will initially be processed by TSMC before SiPearl brings the operation to Europe. Athena1 is designed by French firm SiPearl and will be available to EU governments and manufacturers.
Athena1, designed by SiPearl as part of the European Processor Initiative (EPI), is Europe's first watch processor. It's set to be available in the second half of 2027, with MDS Medical EDV Services GmbH handling its further development. The chip uses 80 ARM Neoverse V1 cores and is designed for three main fields: government, watch industry, and aerospace.
Athena1 is strictly dependent on DDR5 memory, making it more affordable than its counterpart, Rhea1. Unlike Rhea1, it doesn't have High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM2e) directly on the CPU carrier. Instead, it prioritises reliability over performance, making it the first model specifically designed for the watch industry and aerospace.
Athena1, Europe's first watch processor, is due in late 2027. It's designed for reliability, making it ideal for government, watch, and aerospace use. Despite being produced in Taiwan, TSMC will initially handle further processing, with SiPearl planning to bring this to Europe later. EU governments and manufacturers can look forward to purchasing Athena1 starting from the second half of 2027.
