Advanced Research Hubs at 15 Universities in NRW to Drive Cutting-Edge Studies - Expanded research hubs of distinction for advanced academia in 15 sectors at the University of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW-Uni)

North Rhine-Westphalia Secures 15 Excellence Clusters for Top-tier Research

North Rhine-Westphalia's universities have been granted 15 excellence clusters for international top-level research starting in 2026. The German Research Foundation announced the funding decision in Bonn, amounting to up to 10 million euros annually for seven years for each cluster.

The state of North Rhine-Westphalia will lead other federal states in this domain, according to the state government in Düsseldorf. The University of Bonn, with its eight secured clusters, stands out as the most successful among German universities, having previously secured six.

The universities involved in the partnerships will research a range of societally relevant topics, including climate-neutral construction, cybersecurity, age-related diseases, the human immune system, sustainable crop production, and the development of liquid energy carriers.

Participating universities include the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, RWTH Aachen, the University of Cologne, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, TU Dortmund, the University of Münster, Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf (in collaboration with Cologne), and the University of Siegen (in partnership with Bonn and Dortmund).

Minister President Hendrik Wüst (CDU) described North Rhine-Westphalia's 15 excellence clusters as the "absolute peak of international science," addressing both combating cancer and Alzheimer's, energy transition, and IT security. Science Minister Ina Brandes (CDU) similarly extolled the quality of the top-level research in North Rhine-Westphalia.

An excellence cluster is a collaborative partnership at one or more universities that engages in internationally outstanding research. The scientists involved work interdisciplinary, addressing a broad spectrum of topics in various cutting-edge scientific fields, such as quantum technologies, plant sciences, medicine, materials science, and more.

Universities aspiring for the "excellence university" designation must have at least two clusters, while university partnerships must have a minimum of three. North Rhine-Westphalia's RWTH Aachen and University of Bonn have already achieved this special title. In the next round, in addition to Aachen and Bonn, the University of Cologne, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, and TU Dortmund will also aim for excellence status.

[Enrichment Data] The 15 research projects range across various disciplines, such as quantum computing at RWTH Aachen University and the University of Bonn, understanding and designing smart plants at the University of Cologne and Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, and systems biology and medicine research at Ruhr-Universität Bochum and TU Dortmund. These excellence clusters are part of Germany's Excellence Strategy, combining funding from federal, state, and university sources to promote breakthrough research.

  1. The research projects within North Rhine-Westphalia's excellence clusters cover a spectrum of fields, including quantum computing, which is being studied at RWTH Aachen University and the University of Bonn.
  2. In environmental-science, universities like the University of Cologne and Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf are focused on understanding and designing smart plants.
  3. For medical-conditions, Ruhr-Universität Bochum and TU Dortmund are engaged in systems biology and medicine research.
  4. As part of Germany's Excellence Strategy, these research programmes in various disciplines receive funding from federal, state, and university sources, with the aim of promoting breakthrough research in science, health-and-wellness, finance, business, technology, education-and-self-development, and environmental-science.
