Expansion of charging stations spreads further in Bergisch Gladbach

In a significant stride towards sustainable mobility, Mayor Frank Stein announced that the city of Bergisch Gladbach is taking a leading role in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) through the consistent expansion of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs).

Currently, there is no specific public information available about which companies are commercially expanding public EV charging stations in Bergisch Gladbach. However, local craftsmen and service providers offer installation and repair services for EV charging stations. A search for commercial operators for station expansion in Bergisch Gladbach did not yield any named results.

The city, in partnership with the Rheinisch Bergisch district and the city of Leverkusen, aims to intensify this development in the future. The administration is providing the necessary urban traffic and parking areas for this public charging infrastructure.

As of now, approximately 80 public charging points at charging stations are operational throughout the city, with plans to double this number in the coming weeks. This positive development in recent years was only possible because the administration had already prioritised the management of charging infrastructure early on.

The administration is in contact with companies that have been awarded contracts to realise two fast-charging sites in the city as part of the Germany network. The focus will be on densifying public fast-charging infrastructure in the future.

Further information, results of the demand analysis, and an overview of planned and ongoing charging points can be found on the city's website. It is worth noting that the city only allocates areas for public charging infrastructure where there are still unmet needs, calculated in 2023 by the EcoLibro office in Troisdorf based on a comprehensive data basis.

The expansion of public charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in urban traffic areas is gaining momentum. The focus of the expansion in Bergisch Gladbach is now shifting towards inner-city residential areas where private parking and charging options are scarce.

In 2025, the demand analysis was updated to reflect current developments and the already implemented expansion of public charging infrastructure in the city. Private operators such as BELKAW, Wirelane, Hochtief Ladepartner, E-Hub Solutions, and Qwello Deutschland are driving this expansion on a commercial basis.

This progressive move towards a greener and more sustainable city is a testament to Bergisch Gladbach's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting the use of electric vehicles.
