Factory transition underway at Tesla's German plant; Model Y deliveries set to commence in February
Tesla Begins Production of Updated Model Y in Shanghai and Germany
Tesla has officially started the production of the updated Model Y in both Shanghai, China and Germany, as announced by the company on Monday. This follows the introduction of the new Model Y in China at the beginning of January.
In China, the updated Model Y is set to be delivered in February, earlier than the initially planned March delivery date. The first finished vehicles of the updated Model Y rolled off the production line on Monday morning at the German Gigafactory, with deliveries in Germany expected for February as well.
The updated Model Y in China is offered in two versions, unlike in the West. The revised Model Y is only available in a single version: the "Launch Series" with all-wheel drive and a larger battery. In Europe, the base version of the old Model Y with a smaller battery and rear-wheel drive is no longer selectable.
The "Launch Series" offers a modernized appearance, technical update, and a range of extras. At least one German Tesla customer has reported a delivery date as early as this week. In Shanghai, at least one customer is expected to receive their updated Model Y in late February.
It is not likely that the old Tesla Model Y is still orderable in Europe following the factory conversion to the updated 2025 Model Y. Tesla appears to have moved entirely to selling the refreshed model in all markets, including Europe. If ordering options for the old version exist, they are not evident in recent market data or official release information up to July 2025.
In the European configurator, the previous version of the Model Y is no longer visible. The updated Model Y is currently available for order in Europe, parallel to the old Model Y. However, it seems that the demand for the refreshed Model Y is dominating the market, with Tesla aiming to make more affordable versions based on existing Model 3 and Model Y platforms.
The updated Model Y, known as the "Juniper" version, features significant updates including a redesigned exterior, new interior touchscreen for rear passengers, improved suspension, and new lighting elements. This updated Model Y has been launched in China in early 2025 and became available in North America by March 2025, with a recent introduction of a three-row 7-seater variant as well.
Production of the updated Model Y in China began on Monday, according to CNeVPost. Deliveries of updated Model Ys from the Shanghai factory in China are set to begin soon. Tesla has not specified an exact delivery date for the updated Model Y in China yet, but the local configurator shows a date of late February.
Customers in Europe can now order the refreshed Model Y, not the old generation, following Tesla's factory update earlier this year. The first deliveries for February have been announced in Germany, earlier than initially planned. Deliveries in China are expected to begin in late February, earlier than the initially planned March date.
