Feige Admits Support for Prevalent Fantastic Four Hypothesis
The legendary supersquad, Marvel's ever-popular Fantastic Four, is finally diving into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)! Questions abound, such as "Where the blazes have they been these past couple decades while legends like Iron Man and Black Widow battled Titans like Thanos?"
The initial concept art seemed to offer a hint: the image—featuring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn—screamed the '60s. Is The Fantastic Four a period picture? Well, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, has spilled the beans—the movie is indeed a period piece.
Feige got chatty on the Official Marvel Podcast, stating emphatically, "It's a period [film]." And he didn't stop there. "There was another piece of art we released with Johnny Storm flying in the air making a '4' symbol, and there was a cityscape in the corner of that image," Feige continued. "And a lot of brainy folks noticed that cityscape didn't look just like the New York we know or the New York that existed in the '60s in our world. Those are smart observations."
We've gone ahead and showcased that cityscape section of the full artwork above. It certainly looks more... futuristic than the normal-MCU 60 years down the line. Not an outright confirmation that The Fantastic Four exists in a different universe from the regular MCU, but it's as closest as one gets to confirmation from the notoriously tight-lipped Feige.
Feige also enthusiastically shared his excitement regarding The Fantastic Four. "I'm freakin' pumped for what we're doing with The Fantastic Four right now," he said. "Matt Shakman, our director who did WandaVision for us, is working on it. He's already relocated to London, and we're shooting at the end of July."
Feige also hinted that The Fantastic Four cast may take the stage at San Diego Comic-Con, a fact that, mere hours later, was confirmed by Deadline: Marvel Studios will indeed be back in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con, hopefully with their Fantastic Four entourage in tow.
And if that's true, we can bet our bottom dollar we'll learn much more about The Fantastic Four at Comic-Con, and io9 will be there every step of the way. For now, though, we can confirm beyond doubt that The Fantastic Four is set in a period timeline, probably in a parallel universe. How will this line up with the traditional MCU? We'll just have to wait till July 25, 2025, to find out!
