Filmmaker James Cameron Recalls Collaborator and Friend Jon Landau in Memories Shared

Jon Landau, the Legendary Hollywood Producer, Dies at 67

Swinging the curtains wider on a stellar career in cinema, Jon Landau, a towering figure in the film industry, passed away last Friday. He was recognized for his lasting partnership with filmmaker James Cameron, leaving a gaping void in Hollywood.

Amidst the chaos, the silver screen mourns the absence of one of the Creative Industry's sharpest minds. Prior to his departure, Landau was immersed in the production of the upcoming Avatar sequels alongside Cameron, having collaborated with the director on a plethora of monumental films such as the foundation of the sci-fi universe of Pandora, plus True Lies and Titanic. The world would also remember other notable projects that graced his resume, including Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Solaris, and Alita: Battle Angel.

In remembrance, Cameron penned emotional words regarding his cherished companion. Released through the Hollywood Reporter, a statement from Cameron remarks: “We have lost a great producer, a great human being. Jon Landau believed that cinema was the epitome of human artistry, and that to create films, we must first be human ourselves. He will be remembered for his enormous generosity of spirit as much as for the films themselves."

Cameron elaborated on the integral role Landau played in their joint ventures and the broader entertainment realm: "I worked with Jon Landau for 31 years, and not once did I see him cast down or disheartened. He led with a perfect balance of humor, tenacity and sheer delight in the craft. When I met him, he oversaw the production of The Last of the Mohicans (1992) at 20th Century Fox. In the pandemonium of True Lies (1994), we forged an unbreakable bond. Later, Landau joined my production company, Lightstorm Entertainment, and together we conquered the tumultuous waters of Titanic (1997) and Avatar (2009)."

As Jamie so poignantly recalled: "Our work was akin to two mountaineers scaling yet uncharted peaks. We created new physics and methodologies to weave tales. Time and again, Jon threw himself into the fray, refusing to cede faith in our determination to revolutionize cinema. Along the way, we begat a family… a community that Landau cherished and nurtured."

The statement concludes: "Together, we formed an inseparable trapeze act, bound by trust and perfect synchronization. I was his right arm, and he was mine. In recent years, our bond grew even stronger. Landau was my guiding light, providing sage counsel and unwavering support. Regrettably, life's irrevocable fragility claimed him. Yet, our incredible team remains steadfast, vowed to honor Jon's indelible legacy. Not merely by completing pending projects, but by preserving the love and camaraderie that binds our Avatar and Lightstorm kin."
