Firefighters Tackle Hazardous Materials Leak on A3 Highway in Solingen
Firefighters in Solingen responded to a hazardous materials incident on the A3 federal highway at the Ohligser Heide rest area on September 23, 2025. A truck carrying hazardous materials leaked an unknown liquid, leading to an evacuation and cordoning off of the rest area.
Upon arrival, the Fire Department Solingen, led by Markus Wehr, deployed approximately 70 personnel, including various units and volunteer fire departments. Firefighters in chemical protective suits and heavy breathing apparatus inspected the truck, with a drone assisting in reconnaissance. The liquid was found to have leaked onto most of the cargo area.
The rest area was swiftly evacuated to ensure safety. Samples of the liquid were taken and analyzed in a mobile lab, revealing it to be contaminated water. Initially, many injuries were feared, but further investigation ruled out severe injuries. The liquid on the trailer's cargo area was absorbed using a binding agent. The police later organized the removal of the vehicle.
The incident ended around 4:45 PM, with the rest area reopened to the public. The Fire Department Solingen's swift response and thorough handling of the situation ensured the safety of those in the vicinity. The cause of the leak and the extent of any environmental impact remain under investigation.
