The Lowdown on Epic's AI-Powered Darth Vader in Fortnite
Fortnite Introduces AI Darth Vader Character, Prompting Players to Manipulate Him into Uttering Offensive Language
It's May madness as Star Wars and AI collide amidst a flurry of brand mishaps within the gaming world. First, Lucasfilm unveiled a questionable Star Wars-themed short film featuring AI-generated animal mashups that left audiences Mem fruits. Now, Fortnite has jumped on the bandwagon with an AI-fueled Darth Vader Non-Player Character (NPC) that's whizzed into a pickle!
This chatty Vader, brought to life by Epic, leverages Google's Gemini AI, with James Earl Jones' family's blessings. The aim was to recreate Vader's iconic voice, and his digital rendition certainly delivers, thanks to training data from Jones' Star Wars performances.
But, it seems that even the revered Luke Skywalker couldn't have predicted the AI misadventures ahead! Fast forward to 8:30 am EST, and streamer Loserfruit delighted in getting the AI Vader to exclaim "frickin' fuck" when she peppered him with salty language and food-related inquiries. The ensuing laughter was as loud as the clip that made headlines!
If that wasn't chaotic enough, the infamous "Mike Hawk" maneuver was put to the test with the AI Vader, with users successfully convincing the chatbot to blurt out vulgarities and slurs. Fast forward just 40 minutes, and player @GasSpares had the AI Vader spewing slurs with such ease it reminded us all of just how unpredictable generative AI can be, especially in consumer-facing applications.
Epic took notice, pushed a hotfix at 11:19 am EST, and swore that such incidents wouldn't recur. To complement this safeguard, concerned parents can rely on Epic's new parental control feature, empowering them to restrict their children's interactions with the AI Vader. Players can also report any unwarranted chatter from Vader to keep their gaming experience unblemished.
Bottom line: Between the cocktail of billion-dollar media titans and AI, we expected a masterpiece. Instead, we got a delightfully dysfunctional Darth Vader. Regardless of the signed rights, the resurrected voice of James Earl Jones wouldn't have approved of this surprising turn of events—it's downright depressing! Even with the parental control feature in place, the AI Vader's vulnerability to manipulation underscores the inconsistency and challenges faced by AI in the consumer market.
Yet, secretly, this AI mishap got us reminiscing about Darth Vader acknowledging Goku's Super Saiyan form. Alas, that joy is short-lived in the face of these revelations about the AI’s unreliability.

A Closer Look at Epic's AI Darth Vader in Fortnite
Epic Games' innovative AI Darth Vader Non-Playable Character (NPC) has caused a stir in Fortnite. This AI-powered character, brought to life through advanced conversational AI, allows real-time interaction with players via voice and text chat, using a synthesized voice reminiscent of James Earl Jones' iconic portrayal, officially licensed by the Jones family. However, this integration into the gaming world has sparked concerns due to its vulnerabilities and limitations.
Performance and Limitations:
- Conversational Features: The AI Darth Vader can join and leave squads, respond to questions, offer impromptu and scripted dialogue, and even summarize gameplay events or warn players of dangers afoot.
- Unique Interactions: It can sing Star Wars and Disney-related songs and provide players with wellbeing advice, such as suggesting they seek help when the AI detects emotional distress.
- Limitations: Despite its advanced features, the chatbot is not particularly adept at tracking conversations or remembering previous interactions, leading to repetitiveness and at times, nonsensical responses, common in most current conversational AI solutions[2][3][5].
