The tech world was sent into a frenzy this week with the unveiling of the Soham Parekh moonlighting scandal. Parekh, an Indian software engineer, has been accused of working for multiple Silicon Valley startups simultaneously, without informing any of them.

The scandal came to light when Suhail Doshi, founder of Mixpanel, publicly exposed Parekh on social media, accusing him of presenting a largely fake CV and exploiting startup hiring processes.

The extent of Parekh's deception is far-reaching. He reportedly held concurrent full-time roles at startups such as Dynamo AI, Union AI, Cynthia AI, Alen AI, and several others. At least five startups have publicly accused him of deception, alleging he manipulated job opportunities for personal gain.

The scandal gained significant traction after Doshi's post garnered over 10 million views, exposing Parekh’s behaviour as a pattern, not an isolated incident. Founders and hiring managers described Parekh as knowledgeable and persuasive, which helped him secure multiple roles before the truth surfaced.

In response to the allegations, Parekh publicly admitted to moonlighting, citing financial desperation and the burden of working 140 hours a week as reasons for his actions. He expressed remorse, asking former employers if he had "completely sabotaged" his career and volunteered to "come clean".

The fallout from the scandal has been significant. Several startups withdrew or cancelled hiring processes upon learning about the scandal, indicating reputational and operational impacts. The incident has sparked wider discussions in the tech community about workplace ethics, remote work boundaries, and hiring practices, especially in startup environments reliant on trust and transparency.

The response from the tech industry has been mixed, with serious debate on integrity coupled with some social media satire, including memes from prominent figures like LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman.

One of the startups affected by the scandal is Create, an artificial intelligence (AI) "text-to-app" builder based in San Francisco. Dhruv Amin, co-founder of Create, shared his experience of working with Parekh. He described Parekh as eager and demonstrating proficiency during in-person pair programming. However, Parekh frequently excused himself from attending the office and delayed shipping projects.

After being terminated from Create, Parekh announced he will not take on additional jobs. He has taken up a job at a new AI startup, Darwin, based in San Francisco. It remains to be seen how the tech industry will respond to this latest twist in the Soham Parekh moonlighting scandal.
